The erbium laser is a diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) laser that uses erbium(Er³⁺) glass as the gain medium and a semiconductor diode as the pump source. This laser operates at a wavelength of 1.5 μm, which falls within the near-infrared range. The photon energy at this wavelength is relatively low and can be absorbed by the human eye, thereby avoiding retinal damage. According to international standards, it is classified as "eye-safe" (Class 1M), making it particularly suitable for use in open environments.

This article primarily introduces the definition and advantages of diode-pumped solid-state lasers.

Definition

A diode-pumped solid-state laser is a laser device that uses a laser diode as the pump source. Through an optical system, the pump light is directed into a solid-state gain medium (such as a crystal or glass), where it excites active ions (e.g., Nd³⁺, Er³⁺, Yb³⁺) to achieve population inversion, thereby generating laser oscillation.

Advantages

High Efficiency: The absorption spectrum of the laser diode matches well with that of the solid-state medium, resulting in an electro-optical conversion efficiency of 10% to 30%, significantly higher than that of traditional lamp-pumped lasers (<5%).

Long Lifespan and High Reliability: Laser diodes can last tens of thousands of hours, far exceeding the lifespan of traditional flash lamps. This reduces the need for frequent replacements and lowers maintenance costs.

Excellent Beam Quality: Diode-pumped lasers can achieve fundamental mode (TEM₀₀) output with a beam quality factor (M²) close to 1, making them ideal for precision processing and scientific research.

Compact and Convenient: Without the need for large pump lamps or bulky power supplies, the structure is compact and lightweight, making integration into various systems easy and efficient.
